After 30 years in business/investment real estate, I added "citizen activist" to my resume in 1997 when I requested sports stadium documents of King County Executive Ron Sims. After being "stonewalled", I sued, winning more at every stage, up to the state Supreme Court. Documents disgorged by Sims (after 4 years denying they existed!) revealed rigged studies. Sims misled the public on the stadiums. Other issues found me (e.g. Critical Areas Ordinance). Google “Armen Yousoufian” for more.

I was born and raised in New York City. I took classical violin lessons for 10 years and studied astronomy. I built telescopes, grinding the mirrors from scratch. I was a nerd! I considered a career in classical violin but chose astrophysics. I majored in Physics at Rutgers University for 2 years, then switched and graduated in mechanical engineering. I moved to Seattle in 1969 to work on missiles for Boeing, got an MBA from Seattle University, and became a business and real estate entrepreneur for over 30 years. In 1997 I became involved in open government activism when I asked King County Executive Ron Sims for sports stadium documents. I was stonewalled. I sued under the Open Records, or Public Disclosure, Act. I won the case in King County Superior Court, but still didn’t get all the documents, nor recovered my legal fees, which the law said I was entitled to be reimbursed. I appealed and won more in the Court of Appeals and the court of public opinion. But I still didn’t get all the documents! I appealed again and won yet more in the Washington State Supreme Court. But I still don’t have all the documents! While that fight goes on I have become involved in new issues.

Open letter to Democrat state chair Paul Berendt

8:35 AM, Monday morning, March 7, 2005

Subject: Thanks for flattering me with your amusing, but factually incorrect, notion that my attempted recall of Dow Constantine wasn't my idea, but that of Karl Rove and the White House. Hilarious, but untrue! Why didn't you contact me before making such attributions to me?

Note to readers: See immediate prior post, if needed, for context, the Seattle Times article with Berendt's comments, and, hopefully, for some good laughs. I hope Paul has a good sense of humor as well.

Paul,

We've never met, but I've heard you on Mike Siegel's radio program, seen you on television, etc. I am guessing you might have heard me, or have heard of me, as well.

As you may know, I am the person who recently filed the petition to recall King County Councilmember Dow Constantine.

Considering the comments alluding to me, that were attributed to you in Saturday's Seattle Times article, I thought I'd contact you to let you know how surprised I was to learn of your remarks that I am working with the White House and Karl Rove.

This surprise and the factual inaccuracies you published about me (by obvious and direct reference) could have been avoided if you had contacted me first. I wish you had. I would have been happy to let you know I acted independently and could only have been astonished that anyone could think I had such connections as you have attributed to me.

Speaking of surprises, it may be news to you that it seems like it was just yesterday that I was a Democrat PCO in Seattle's central area. For the record, I am currently not officially affiliated with any party, and consider myself an independent. What I mostly am is an activist for open, honest, transparent, and reasonably efficient, government. I am particularly disturbed at the widespread corruption I believe exists in King County government under Ron Sims. In this regard, you may know that I have been the plaintiff in a Public Disclosure Act lawsuit agains Sims, over sports stadium documents, that went all the way to the state Supreme Court, having won at every one of the three court levels (see: www.ArmenYousoufian.com ).

And speaking of full disclosure, I have commented on the article from the Saturday Seattle Times at my blog. Feel free to see what I had to say, including my surprise over your attribution to me of my connections to the White House and Karl Rove. I hope you have a sense of humor.

Thanks for giving me the best laughs in the past couple of weeks.

And for the record, at the next available opportunity, or by return email, suitable for publication, I'd appreciate your giving me credit for having thought of, and implemented the idea to try to recall Constantine, entirely on my own. That is what happened. I thought you should know. And I'd also appreciate your passing that on to the same folks you distributed your comments to in your emailing and hard copy mailing.

In the meantime, don't be surprised if I post this email to you at my blog. I'd also like to post your response, which I'd appreciate at your earliest opportunity.

One last question: where did you get the idea that my effort to recall Constantine had anything to do with any Republicans, let alone Karl Rove and/or the White House? Inquiring minds, including this one, would like to know, and I'd appreciate the courtesy of an answer.

Armen:

What a "Gift to" be Dumped in Your Lap!

It makes a Person "Proud" to be an American, to Know the Democratic Party is "On Their Toes", "On Top Of Things" and "ON" to Karl Rove and the Republican Party's "Dirty Tricks"! Finally, the Democratic Party in Washington State is "Doing Their Homework"!

If King County & Chairman Mao decide to Appeal to the Washington State Supreme Court, and that Court "kicks" your Case back into Judge Ramsdell's Superior Court, For a "Bad Faith" Hearing, you can now Claim it was Karl Rove's Idea to do the Recall, and that the Democratic Party will "Vouch" for that! You can Claim you were Only Following Orders, like at Abu Grahib, and the Person who should be Held Accountable for the $20,000 + Legal Fees is none other than that "Higher Up" Karl ("I Love You, Thank You") Rove! You had Faith in Karl, you Trusted his Expert Advice, so there is NO "Bad Faith" Involved, Only "Good Faith"!

First rule of blogging: take the good with the bad.

To delete a comment, when it is neither profane or abusive, shows cowardice. Those that follow that path will maintain onanistic, unread sites. As in, you may not like what I wrote (truth hurts) but you should either refute it or quit blogging.

You really need to realize the world does not revolve around you.

Dear Anonymous,

I noticed your gratuitously inflammatory and negative posts that have no connection to the subject at hand and that they are now deleted. How is one to take such comments as you have made from one who does not choose to indicate who they are? Armen's identity is known. His track record is known. Why are you hiding behind "anonymous" when you are making comments as negative and unsubstantiated as you have. Are you Paul Berendt? It's Mr. Berendt who claimed, without, apparently, checking with Armen, that Armen has ties to Karl Rove. If you are Paul Berendt, show yourself. If you are afraid of retribution, fine, continue to post, but at least keep it on subject and knock off the personal attacks. In my opinion, it sounds like you're just out to get somebody, anybody, and you lose credibility that way. Just my opinion, of course.
